Corrosion under insulation (CUI) occurs under all types of insulation and is one of the top concerns facing industry today. It can lead to increased maintenance costs and may cause pipe leaks or even ruptures. CUI is expensive, accounting for an estimated 10% of overall maintenance costs and 40-60% of pipeline maintenance costs in the oil and gas industry.

Latest insights on Corrosion under Insulation!

Large investments are already made to mitigate CUI including research into new coating systems, cladding systems and CUI detections systems. ROCKWOOL Technical Insulation has conducted extensive cyclic CUI testing in cooperation with a third party to determine the key factors for the insulation in relation to CUI. The results of this research were presented at the NACE corrosion conference in New Orleans, USA.

The risk of corrosion can be reduced by careful selection of insulation materials. ROCKWOOL’s ProRox products with WR-Tech™ have 5-times less water absorption (<0.2 kg/m2) than any other EN 13472-compliant mineral wool insulation on the market and they’re the only stone wool insulation that maintains water-repellency at temperatures up to 250°C (482° F). Our stone wool insulation products are produced with a very low water-leachable salt content, and have the fastest water dissipation of any EN-13472 compliant mineral wool so they dry faster, reducing the risk of CUI.
