Experts weigh in on the key challenges, future promise of insulation in LNG

Nathan Longwell and Kamal Gupta of ROCKWOOL Technical Insulation shared key insights on how insulation performance affects efficiency, safety, emissions, and long-term reliability in LNG facilities, detailed in a Q&A in the November 2025 issue of LNG Industry Magazine.

The Q&A offers practical advice for engineers and project stakeholders handling increasingly complex operational and regulatory challenges.

Nathan and Kamal answered questions covering a broad range of topics essential to insulation solutions for LNG, including:

  • The key factors for selecting insulation for LNG projects, including thermal performance across extreme temperature ranges, resistance to moisture ingress, acoustic control, passive fire protection, and durability under cyclic operating conditions.

  • The importance of insulation to the LNG process itself, with an explanation of how effective insulation helps maintain cryogenic temperatures, minimise boil-off risks, reduce reliance on energy-intensive refrigeration systems, and lower operating costs.
  • How high-performance insulation can reduce carbon emissions in LNG operations by improving energy efficiency, limiting boil-off gas, and reducing the need for flaring or venting—thereby cutting both indirect and direct greenhouse gas emissions.
  • How evolving standards and regulations, along with stricter requirements around safety, energy efficiency, and sustainability, are raising expectations for insulation design, material quality, and lifecycle performance. Instead of being a compliance burden, these changes are seen as catalysts for innovation and improved system integrity.
  • Future developments in LNG insulation, including advances in ROCKWOOL’s stone wool insulation to combat the risks of corrosion under insulation (CUI).

Nathan and Kamal highlighted our ProRox® insulation with CR-Tech, a proprietary corrosion inhibitor applied inside the insulation to provide a thin protective barrier against corrosion on the pipe wall.

Rigorous industry-standard testing confirms that, when combined with our proprietary WR-Tech water-repellent technology, ProRox® stone wool insulation with CR-Tech provides effective protection from water and corrosion—without sacrificing the thermal insulation and acoustics protection critical for LNG applications.
